First off, I have found a post that more eloquently than I ever could, has summarized my political history and metamorphosis. Cupcate is now officially my homegirl--she made me feel much less like a freak!
I just watched a speech from a fabulous-looking Hillary Clinton to her supporters in New York. She has, in the last 2 weeks, really stepped up the fashionista quotient. She's no longer in the hideous royal blue pantsuit, and her accessories are noticeable, but flattering. Mad props to her latest stylist. But, what is more important is the following quote, which was the most powerful thing I have heard her say during this campaign:
"Lastly, I want to thank my mother... who was born before women could vote. Now, she's watching her daughter on this stage!"
How can anyone think that we are at a social equilibrium when our mothers are merely a generation removed from the suffrage movement that gave >50% of the nation's citizens the right to vote?! Contrary to dumbass Sherri Shepard/Elizabeth Hasselbeck/Whoopi Goldberg's chattering on the view... black men, who were owned legally as property, were given ballots before women of any race were shown into the voting booth. I say that trying to avoid all stratification, and simply attempting to demonstrate the harsh reality of racism and sexism that we still deal with today--Super Tuesday 2008. My admiration for Hillary is growing more and more; not as a function of our common anatomy, or skin color, but because the humanity and the passion she exudes has become genuine to me.
You go, girl.
I went home for an extended weekend after my Immunology and Genetics exam on Saturday. Yes, exam. On. Saturday. I was completely disconnected from the world, as I tend to be when I'm at home in the sticks with dial-up internet and gravel roads. I enjoy it--it renews me, and reminds me of what is actually quite important, rather than what is in my face and inducing panic on a superficial and temporary basis.
I login to my Facebook account and see that I have a message. This is really a rare occasion, as most of my friends are either IMers or MySpace messagers. So I open my inbox to realize that it is from a guy that I knew at Mizzou. Someone who is one of those people whose number you get because they refuse to stop staring at you until you put it into your phone.... then you never delete it because you WANT to know when they call you, so you know NOT to answer. Also: said acquaintance is a ridiculous and illogical, uber-conservative, die-hard Republican and fundie anti-choice Catholic.
"Lacey,
What happened to you? You used to be Republican...but
now I see this stuff about you supporting these like
really...horrible...people..."
Saith the man who thinks Mike Huckabee is a second Jesus.
Speaking of Jesus, I think the best way to describe my political life is in this particular piece of Scripture: "Repent, and thou shalt be saved." :)
